Optimum Team Practice
Evolving Perspectives in Healthcare

In May 2017 AAPA (American Association of Physician Assistants) adopted a new policy known as Optimal Team Practice. This new policy empowers state organizations to pursue the following goals:

  • Emphasize PA’s commitment to team practice with physicians with degree of collaboration to be determined at the practice level.

  • Replace obsolete supervisory agreement laws with practice-level decision-making about collaboration.

  • Eliminate legal requirements for PA’s to have a specific relationship with a physician in order to practice.

  • Create separate majority-PA boards to regulate PA’s, or give that authority to healing arts or medical boards that have as members both PA’s and physicians who practice with PA’s.

  • Authorize PA’s to be directly reimbursed by all public and private insurers.

The reason the AAPA adopted this new policy is because of the changing healthcare market across the US.
